Welcome to HRCU's Spaulding High School Branch |

Now Open!
Welcome to HRCU at Spaulding High School, Holy Rosary Credit Union's full service, student-operated branch. Although a high school may seem a surprising place to open a branch, it was a natural progression of the Credit Union's on-going commitment to educating our community's youth about finances.

HRCU's presence in the schools began with Banking Days in Rochester elementary schools. Through this program, we were able to encourage the habit of saving by going to participating schools once a week and allowing students to make deposits to their accounts. Because the purpose of this program is to encourage saving money, these young members are not able to make withdrawals from their accounts on Banking Days. For this, they must plan ahead with their parents and make a trip to the Credit Union. Due to the success of this program, as the Credit Union has grown and opened branches in the communities surrounding Rochester, we have also expanded the program.
In addition to the Rochester school system, Banking Days is currently active in various Dover, Somersworth and Farmington schools as well. In addition to allowing our young members the opportunity to do their banking at the school, HRCU has grown the Banking Day program to include an educational component. We have taken advantage of opportunities to give presentations at the schools on money, banking, and other related topics. In 2004 Matt Beaulieu, HRCU's Business Development Coordinator, developed a class on Money Management for the Rochester Middle and High School students. In 2006, this concept was expanded to a semester-long course for the 7th and 8th grade students in Farmington. This program was so well received, a modified version was then offered at Rochester Middle School.
"HRCU at Spaulding" happened several years ago as Rochester business leaders and the School Department took part in a program called "School to Work", which incorporated students into a work environment, helping them prepare for the "real world." Holy Rosary Credit Union thought this program could be expanded, and in contacting the school department, found that they had been working to establish a concentration at the High School called the School of Finance. HRCU shared the idea of establishing a Credit Union branch at the High School with school administration. This branch would not only give students specific work experience at a financial institution, but would also teach them practical lessons needed for handling themselves in the workplace. The School Department was enthusiastic and, as required, put the project out to bid. HRCU was the only financial institution to bid and the project was enthusiastically endorsed by the Rochester School Board.
The focus now became centered around building a branch that would:
- Appeal to students and be innovative
- Be secure
- Be accessible both within the school and to outside members
- Be built cost effectively - since this branch was probably never going to be profitable
With these goals in mind, local designers and contractors were contacted to develop a concept for the Branch. Making a professional, inviting space would not be simple, as HRCU at Spaulding High School was to be located in an old engine repair room that opens to the High School's Technology Center. They rose to the challenge and developed a concept that creatively combined the functions of the Credit Union and the classroom, in an atmosphere like no other financial institution.
Knowing that the purpose of this branch was educational, and as such would most likely not be profitable, cost of this project was very important. There were great ideas that did not change the design a great deal but made the project much more cost effective. HRCU at Spaulding High School is now a totally unique space that is inviting and exciting for students and adults alike. It was our goal to institute a program that would live up to that space.
We opened our doors the first day of school, August 31, 2006, with a curriculum that we feel does just that. Under the supervision of Leah Sprowl our HS Branch Supervisor, students not only learn how to run a cash drawer and wait on members, but also about compliance and privacy, accounting, and marketing. Guest speakers from the Credit Union have visited the Branch to talk about their areas of expertise, including our CEO Brian Hughes, giving the students insight as to other career opportunities within the field.
Each student is bound by the same rules and regulations as our employees, including confidentiality, member service, etc. In addition, the Credit Union blocks information on school department employee accounts for further privacy. The technology center and business teachers coordinate with Leah on the educational side. We are very excited by this program thus far. The students seem to like the course, the facility looks great, and we are hoping that we all gain from this experience.
Student Programs from HRCU
Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, the HRCU Banking Fundamentals Program at SHS has been given an "enriched" status and is now considered a college prep level course having a weighted credit toward a student's GPA.

In 1995, Holy Rosary Credit Union (HRCU) launched a scholarship program designed to help our members choosing to further their education. Each year, ten $1000 scholarships are awarded to members enrolled full-time in an accredited college. Although most award recipients are graduating high school seniors, we've also been proud to support students in their second and third years, as well as adult members returning to school.
